About THE OUACHITA CONSERVATION LAND FUND
Our organization is a 501(c)3 organization and was created by people from all walks of life who saw a great need and chose to do something about it. Our founders consist of Native Americans, enrolled Choctaw and Cherokee, as well descendants of the great tribes who once lived on these lands. We hope that you will join us on this mission.
Our mission is to save one piece of land at a time, either by purchase or easement. Many of these lands have been neglected and abused over the years, and all are in danger of development, such as clear cutting, logging, and building construction. Most of these burial sites have been neglected and have overgrowth and fallen trees, or used as a dumpsite. Once acquisition is complete, we can begin burial site registration and recognition, as well as restoring the sites through removal of dead and downed trees, trash removal, and marking graves.
All lands will also double as wildlife sanctuaries. This is important as surrounding wooded lands are being cleared and the human population increases. This will provide a safe space for all creatures. Many of these burial sites are the only untouched, forested lands in a given area.
No hunting or camping will be allowed on these lands, as they are sacred and should be treated as such. Just like any other cemetery, these grounds are to be respected.
Many property owners who own the land where these burial sites are located, do not wish to allow the state archaeological society on the premises to conduct an archaeological survey. Their understanding is that a registered burial ground would decrease the value of a property. This is true in more than 60% of the cases, as it would prevent the land from being developed, including clear cutting, logging, and construction of residential homes, lodging facilities, and commercial buildings.
We understand these land owners concerns and can help mitigate these situations through our network of attorneys, financial advisors, accountants, and real estate agents.
